John Clare's pithy take on life and art (with toast and two fried eggs on the side)

“I’m not interested in light, space, organic forms blah, blah, blah, I’m interested in people and
their reactions. All my works are personal. There isn’t an artist whose work isn’t personal....”

 

John Clare was brought up in a very tough South London neighborhood - “It was fun but it had its moments” Clare reminisces. Clare has always painted, but it was his teenage years that evolved the current Bacon-esque work.

 

“I got involved with drugs (coke, speed, ecstasy), I saw people stabbed and shot at (myself
included), some close friends of mine have been murdered or killed themselves and yet there’s
been so much love as well.”


Growing up in a working class South London family, what he saw in and around had a profound
effect on the life and work of the multi-media artist. You could argue that his real talent was staying alive. What kept John Clare sane, surrounded by a period of chaos, was his art - it helped him make sense of it al
